Library Building Unit #3
Description
Almost immediately after the first library building was built in 1952, plans for an addition were being drawn up. And within a year of completing Library II, planning began in 1962 for Library III, which was completed in 1967. The growth of the library mirrors the expansion of the university's academic vision. In 1952, only Bachelor's degrees were issued, by 1961 Master's degrees, and by 1967 there was a need for a research library capable of fulfilling the research needs of PhD's.
This building signals a shift away from the Pereira & Luckman campus plan towards a more eclectic style. The color of the vertical columns references the campus style, but the size and scale dwarf the surrounding 2-story buildings. The architectural firm Frost & Greer (also known as Cooke, Frost & Greer) designed the library's 8-story tower to hold an expanding number of books, as well as personal study carrels for faculty and graduate students.
